When the leaders of 1st Broxbourne Scout Group rang Alliance Cleaning to request a price for a deep clean of their meeting space, they expected a quote.
What they received instead was a full day’s clean, free of charge, from a team of eight.
The visit was part of the Alliance Giving Back initiative, a quarterly programme through which Alliance Cleaning provides a free professional clean to non-profit organisations and community groups near its contract locations across the UK.
Why Volunteer-Run Spaces Like Scout Huts Need Support
Scout huts sit at the centre of their local communities, but they are not commercially run.
Facilities are managed by unpaid volunteer trustees who rely entirely on membership fees, fundraising, and grants to cover running costs. Energy bills, maintenance, and insurance all eat into limited budgets, leaving professional deep cleaning an expense most groups simply cannot justify.
The scale of the Scout movement in the UK is growing. According to the Scout Association, more than 100,000 young people are currently on waiting lists to join. Groups that have the space and the volunteers to take on new members face real practical challenges in keeping ageing buildings to a proper standard.
These are the spaces where young people develop confidence, learn practical skills, and take on responsibility. Keeping them properly clean should not sit at the bottom of a volunteer trustee’s to-do list.
A Full Day’s Work, at No Cost
Alliance Cleaning deployed a team of eight, drawn from both office and field-based staff, and spent the full day working through every area of the building.
The team carried out wooden floor polishing, carpet cleaning, floor steam cleaning, and window cleaning inside and out. The kitchen, hall, washrooms, upstairs meeting rooms, and staircase all received a thorough deep clean.
By the time the team had finished, the building had been cleaned to the same standard Alliance Cleaning applies on its commercial contracts.
A Thank-You Nobody Expected
When the Scout leaders returned to inspect the premises, they were taken aback.
The building had been transformed.
A few weeks later, the Alliance Cleaning team received something none of them had anticipated: a collection of drawings made by the children in the Scout group.
Each one was a colourful, hand-drawn thank-you for the clean hut. For the team, it was the best kind of thank-you.
