Fogging has increased in popularity in office workspaces. As COVID-19 continues to impact employee downtime worldwide, office managers and those in charge of office cleaning are turning to more intense cleaning practices to reduce the spread of germs and infection.
One such practice is known as Fogging. Fogging can be a useful additional precaution alongside daily office cleaning, and office deep cleans to keep offices clean and hygienic, but what exactly is it?
As the name suggests, the fogging process is undertaken by using a disinfectant spray released via a fogging machine and creates a fog-like effect in the room in which it is being used. The spray is highly effective at eliminating germs and bacteria covering large open spaces.
Fogging v Electrostatic Spray
Fogging cleaning is a great option when cleaning large spaces such as warehouses, but when cleaning offices, the best option is an electrostatic spray. Our Alliance Cleaning EcoSystem uses electrostatic sanitisation to offer a full 360 degree sanitisation. Unlike fogging, electrostatic spray can 360 degree wrap around small items rather than sitting on top of items, resulting in a sanitised workplace environment to the highest standards – killing 99.99% of all pathogens, bugs, & viruses in the workplace. It is food safe, so even if food is left overnight in an office, this will be safe to consume the following day.

Fogging cleaning – the benefits
- Fogging is a safe and effective practice.
- Fogging can dramatically reduce the number of airborne contaminants.
- Fogging can cover large areas
- Fogging is more cost effective than electrostatic spraying
Fogging cleaning – any drawbacks?
While fogging cleaning can be extremely effective, it does not work well on vertical surfaces – this is because the solution falls downwards. There have been some trials using electricity to charge the droplets and prevent them from falling, but their effectiveness is still to be determined.
- Will not reach closed areas such as enclosed electrical panels.
- Will not wrap around objects, such as laptops, it will just clean the visible surface
- Possibility of electrical damage if not sufficiently protected.
How to prepare for fogging office cleaning?
If you choose to use fogging in your workspace, you must prepare the area beforehand. To do this, you must:
- Thoroughly clean the area.
- Switch off, seal, or remove any equipment sensitive to water.
- Ensure the oath of the spray jets will not be obstructed.
- Ensure all personnel has left the area before beginning the procedure.
- Closing any doors and strip curtains to seal the area.
- Placing appropriate warning signs at entry points so no one can access the room while the process is taking place.
No one must enter an area that has been fogged for a minimum of 60 minutes after the unit has been switched off unless wearing appropriate protection.
