What Does Your Desk Say About You?

Alliance Cleaning Advice

Did you know that on average people in an office spend approximately 5 hours and 41 minutes per day sitting at their desks? With such a large portion of the day spent working from a desk, it’s no wonder that many people like to turn their area into their personal safe haven.

What Does Your Desk Say About You Within an Office Environment?

Working day to day within a professional environment where you will spend half of your week, it is important to make sure you feel comfortable, relaxed and productive in the space you are in. That is why many people choose to personalise their desks with essential items or belongings that make them feel more at home. With this in mind have you ever wondered… what does your desk say about you?

The Different Types of Desks

Everyone’s personalities and tastes are different and a space that you may spend most of your time at will often reflect areas of your personality. This is why there are many different types of desks you will encounter within an office environment.

The Tidy, Organised Desk

Usually the more simplistic, minimalistic style of desk – these types of people tend to work best in a cleaner environment that generally includes the things they will use on a daily basis. There may be an exception of a small plant perhaps, but in order to enhance their productivity, they will leave their desk looking clear and efficient. An organised desk is an organised mind and this person thrives on structure and hard work.

The Plant Lover Desk

If you can’t work outside, bring the outside to you – these are the desks that are covered in a variety of plants and foliage also known as ‘the plant lover’. These desks are great for enhancing a comfortable and relaxing environment that improves the air quality around you and brings connotations of positivity and stress relief. Feeling closer to nature can stimulate innovation and imagination and this person tends to be more creative, laid back and inspired.

The Messy, Document Covered Desk

This type of desk may be the classic film stereotype of being an ‘overworked, heavy-lifter trying to make it to the top’; however, for some people this is a reality. These types of desks will start to amount up with piles of paperwork, documents and folders creating a messy, unorganised workspace. This person is usually stressed, overworked and a big overachiever. They want to keep progressing in their job role and may take on too much responsibility to get there. On the other hand, this person thrives under pressure and possesses traits of ambition and self-reliance and having a messy desk is just the sacrifice they make.

The Snacker’s Desk

The one who probably forgot to have breakfast, the snacker’s desk will be the one covered in crumbs, wrappers and usually a couple of coffee cups on the side. These types of people may be a little rushed and try to fit in normal tasks alongside work. Hunger can often be a distraction so to avoid compromising work they will snack regularly in order to feel satisfied both physically and mentally. So whilst their desk may look untidy, their mind is very much clear to concentrate on work.

The Creative Desk

Possibly the most comfortable of them all – the creative desk tends to be covered in personal items, memories and represents a person’s interests and affinities outside of the workplace. These desks are much more personalised to people and can create a cosy, more homely environment that brings feelings of safety and comfort. The creative desk enables feelings of both positivity and productivity and this person is a friendly face to have around the office.

The Importance of a Clean and Organised Workspace

What does your desk say about you? Whether you’re the tidy, minimalist desk or the messy, unorganised desk, it is important to keep your area clean and hygienic in a communal workspace. Wiping down your desk at the end of each day and keeping your worktop organised to how you like it will help maintain a pleasant, clean environment.
